Amputee physiotherapy can provide support and guidance to navigate the transition from hospital to home. Many challenges come with adjusting to life after limb loss. Here's how amputee physiotherapy can help:

  • Improved transfers: working with you to improve your transfers from bed to wheelchair or sofa. By personalised treatments, enhancing muscle strength balance and coordination to ensure your transfers are safe.
  • Advice for carers: If you have carers assisting you at home, guidance on manual handling techniques to build both your and your carer's confidence in the best way to support you. From lifting and positioning to providing personal care, advice can be given for the best way to manage whilst making this part of the exercise.

  • Comprehensive support: beyond addressing the physical challenges advice and recommendations can be given to manage other areas such as scar management advice, and techniques to manage phantom limb sensation and/or pain.

Occasionally, the waiting list can be long, so undergoing physiotherapy in the meantime can help you optimise your potential, increasing your chances of receiving a prosthetic limb.

Pre-prosthetic guidance can include advice and education on scar management, stretching techniques, and strength exercises. By focusing on building your strength and flexibility now, you can aim for a smoother transition into your prosthetic journey.

Whether you are newly fitted with a prosthesis or navigating outdoor activities, prosthetic physiotherapy can assist in mastering the process of putting on and taking off your limb, improving your standing balance and boosting confidence in various daily tasks, such as household mobility or outdoor ventures.

Overcoming challenges as a prosthetic user can feel daunting but with specialised physiotherapy, you can regain confidence and tackle activities like shopping, navigating steps, crossing roads or even returning to the gym.
